The Wait Is (Really) Over: Japan Officially Opens Borders To Independent Travelers

In huge news for Japan winter 2022/23, the Japanese government today announced that fully independent tourists may enter Japan from October 11, 2022.

Visa-free travel will resume
Independent travellers may enter the country (no tour groups or travel agents necessary)
The daily border entry cap will be removed

The announcement comes four months after Japan tentatively allowed the first small tour groups into the country in May following two years of strictly closed borders. A series of incremental steps to relax restrictions on entry have been introduced throughout the year.

This latest news means travellers may now enjoy entry to the country without applying for a visa through a travel agent, and without being signed up with a guided package tour. This is the official news we’ve been waiting for – if you’re reading this, YES: you can start booking and ride bottomless powder snow in Japan this winter!
